Senegal national football team publicly celebrated their Africa Cup of Nations triumph ahead of a friendly match against Peru in Paris, even as the title remains under dispute.

The team brought the AFCON trophy onto the pitch at the Stade de France before kickoff, presenting it to fans in a symbolic show of pride. Captain Kalidou Koulibaly led his teammates during the moment, which included a lap of honour. Koulibaly and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy later carried the trophy to the stadium's presidential box, placing it there as part of the pre match ceremony.

This display came shortly after the Africa Cup of Nations title was officially reassigned. Earlier in the month, the Confederation of African Football overturned the result of the January final and declared Morocco as the winners of the 2025 tournament.

The original final between Senegal and Morocco national football team ended in dramatic and controversial circumstances. With the score level at 0-0 late in the game, Morocco were awarded a penalty in stoppage time. Senegal's players reacted by leaving the field in protest, causing a delay that lasted around 17 minutes.

When play resumed, Morocco failed to convert the penalty. Senegal then went on to score the decisive goal in extra time, seemingly securing the championship. However, the Moroccan Football Federation later filed an appeal, challenging the events surrounding the match.

After reviewing the case, CAF ruled that Senegal's actions amounted to a forfeiture. As a result, the governing body awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory, effectively handing them the title.

Senegal have since challenged the decision and taken the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The court has indicated that it will deliver a ruling as quickly as possible, though no final outcome has yet been announced.

The friendly match against Peru marked Senegal's first appearance since the controversial final. It also serves as part of their preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which begins in June.

Senegal have been drawn into a competitive group alongside France, Norway, and either Bolivia or Iraq, as they look ahead to the global tournament while awaiting a final decision on their AFCON status.
