Ghana have dismissed head coach Otto Addo just 72 days before the start of this summer's FIFA World Cup, following a string of disappointing results that raised concerns about the team's form heading into the competition.
The decision came shortly after a 2-1 defeat to Germany in an international friendly played in Stuttgart on Monday. That loss followed a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria in
Vienna the previous Friday. These back to back results extended Ghana's losing run to four matches, increasing pressure on the coaching staff.
Despite having a squad that includes attacking talents such as Antoine Semenyo of Manchester City and Mohammed Kudus of Tottenham Hotspur, the Black Stars struggled to deliver consistent performances. Their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations further compounded concerns about the team's direction under Addo.
In a statement released after the Germany match, the Ghana Football Association confirmed that it had parted ways with Addo with immediate effect. The governing body did not go into detail about the decision but indicated that plans for the team's future leadership would be announced soon.
Addo, 50, was born in Germany and spent his entire playing career there before representing Ghana at international level, earning 15 caps. He returned for a second spell as national team manager in March 2024, but his tenure has now ended abruptly at a critical moment for the squad.
The upcoming World Cup, set to take place across Canada, Mexico and the United States, will run from June 11 to July 19. Ghana face a challenging group stage schedule, beginning their campaign against Panama on June 18. They will then meet England on June 23 before taking on Croatia on June 27.
With limited time remaining before the tournament, Ghana must now quickly appoint a new head coach and stabilise the squad as they prepare for one of football's biggest stages.
